Being Bugged
Postby DeirdreMcGowan » Sat Oct 11, 2008 9:35 am
Deirdre was used to nuisances. A starship was a complicated system made up of thousands of components, and more often than not something broke down or malfunctioned. The job of being a Chief Engineer for the most part was juggling all of those balls and keeping the whole act moving even if a few of the balls ended up being lopsided. Occasionally, like today, some other wrench was thrown into the gears. It was certainly her first energy bug infestation. They hadn't even managed to throw that kind of scenario at her at the Academy.
Luckily the little blighters weren't dangerous, but when they flew into and then through certain systems the little spikes caused the minor headache of having to compensate for strange energy frequencies. After a couple of hours of tinkering and studying the patterns she was able to isolate the frequencies and throw a virtual "mosquito net" over the systems to keep the little critters out. Nonetheless she hoped science was figuring out how to capture the little devils or at least isolate them. They were a distraction just flying around being bright.
Otherwise, everything was quite normal in Engineering. They'd finished going through all the communications systems and prepping the ship for being Zodiac Fleet Command. Everything was as efficient as her people could make it without tearing everything apart and starting from scratch, which they certainly didn't have time for. That would have to wait until the next refit anyway, and Starfleet R&D likely would have something better to install by then anyway.
Truelight was back to working on the LCARS interface for the new command chair, and Deirdre had thrown together a number of different designs for the unit's infrastructure and was allowing the computer to work on simulated stress tests to see which held up better. The base design of the chair's comfort features were done, and Deirdre couldn't begin to integrate them into the framework until she had the results from the stress testing. Like all of the other consoles and other access points that had blown during the attack, the extra shielding and surge protection that would be in place underneath the chair were already planned and ready.
With the specifics of the mission known now, she'd be able to take her time getting everything set. There was no way she'd be able to rip the CC out and put in a new one during such a high tension mission when they could end up at war with the Tholians at the drop of a hat. She only hoped that if there was any shooting the current CC didn't blow out with the Captain in it again.
