"Tea and Coffee (Fear and Trepidation)"
Joint Log of Schen and Janelle (Helm and Science)
Though the replicator mixed her coffee just right, Janelle still felt the need to stir it with a spoon. The smell was warm and inviting. She removed the spoon, placing it on the table.
Sip. Ah, very nice.
Not bad she thought. Schen had gotten tea and was playing with her cup as well. Moments of silence hung over the table until the Andorian spoke.
"So, that was some mission... that swampy planet."
"Hmmm..." Schen said. "I don't know. I'm never comfortable with missions."
"Are you only comfortable with piloting starships? Like me only comfortable with plants, and the cold," Janelle laughed, thinking of other things she was happy with. She silently agreed however, as the loss of Jadyn had weighed heavily on everyone.
Schen nodded. "Yes. I barely made it out of training thanks to everything else. Combat was definitely my worse. I feel next to useless. Out of my environment isn't something that I can handle. Of course, I don't tell people things like this."
Her antenna perked up again and she laughed. "But you are telling me?" She waved her hand from side to side. "Don't worry, I won't tell. Everyone did notice you and Atton walking together for a good part of the hike." Janelle sipped more from her mug. "Is something going on between you two?"
"Oh that." Schen made a face. "No. Nothing really,” shaking her head. “He's just knows how to have a good time. Also I'm engaged; not that it matters." This surprised Janelle.
"Wow, I had no idea.” Janelle touched Schen’s free hand briefly then smiled. “It does matter. Congratulations. Have you set a date? Who is he? Where did you meet? Do you have a ring? I should let you answer something."
Laughing, Schen shook her head. "Yes; it’s not very publicized. And we're both perfectly free to pursue others, which is why most can't even tell." She shook her head. "The date will be sometime within the next few years. Instead of rings we got tattoos. We've known each other for ages. He works aboard a trading ship. One day we decided we should get married. Which reminds me I haven't talked to him in a while..."
"I'd get your message out soon," Janelle added. Schen reminded her of something. "Oh, my baby is due soon," her eyes widening. "I need to get to a communication station. I completely forgot." She took a larger gulp of coffee. "That is another story altogether." She placed the mug on the table. "You said free to pursue others?"
"Well..." Schen began slowly. "There have been a few here and there, but not a lot." She shrugged. "It was never really my thing; but I like to have one or two a year at least. It makes for interesting conversation with Gavin, my fiancé."
Janelle nodded. "I had a few lonely years on that Vulcan science vessel. I mean I loved the experience, but they are not the most romantic bunch." She held on to a thought for a moment. "There was someone on the Aquarius when we spent some time together, but I think he likes the chase more than the prey." She looked down. "It would be nice to have someone to share some time with. Not with this next mission coming up from the sounds of it." Her eyes and antenna turned squarely to Schen. "Will you be alright? Perhaps there is some way I can help."
Instead of answering straight out Schen closed her eyes and sighed. This mission really had her bothered. "I don't know. And I feel kind of like a coward for my thinking. Really I just don't know."
"You speak of the danger ahead. For me the best thing is to focus on the task at hand, back away from the big picture. That's where things can drive you crazy." She placed her hands to each side of her mug. "Perhaps I can help you. Not the help Atton gives and nothing Nidari would either, and I respect her deeply.” She grabbed the mug and took a drink. "I'm always toying with different tea blends. I have calming one here and there."
"Tea is okay...one of the few things I'll ingest that isn't bland." She stared at the liquid in her cup.
"How can you get stuck on danger? I don't know how to greet the unknown without trepidation." Then there was her brother, but she could never bring herself to talk about that.
"Well if your anxiety is not wearing clothes in the arboretum I have a brew for you. Atton found that out as well. Were you there too?" Janelle held her head in her hands for a moment then played with her antenna. "What a first impression you must have had."
She had been green and startled. "Not so terrible now, though then, it was very...interesting."
The Andorian nodded, "I'll not do that to you again. If you'd like help through any of that please let me know. In know what it was like on my first post. Perhaps you'd like the calm of the arboretum or science garden. I think you need something new to relax you." She finished the last of the coffee.
"I'd appreciate that. I think it would be a long overdue break from my routine."
Janelle pointed to Schen's cup. "Finish that tea and we can find a communications terminal."
