"Just a Little Sidetracked - Part I"
LtCdr Atton Jetrel & Doctor Jocelyn Nidari
"I can't believe how amazing this seminar is. Did you hear what Doctor Adams was outlining in his proposal? If his hypothesis is correct, the medical applications are simply endless." Jocelyn looked to Atton, eyes shining with excitement. She waved the pamphlet in her hand as they exited the conference area on the station. "I must admit that I was skeptical about him using mutations from Terran dung beetles to genetically replicate strands of viable symbiotic materials to combine the various photosynthetic chemicals from his selected group of plants, but his presentation was flawless. I can't wait until intermission is over and we can get back in there. I have so many questions."
"Uh, yeah." Atton himself looked like he had just been waterboarded. He didn't know what Terran dung beetles were before he entered the seminar with Jocelyn, and now he wished he knew less than he did. This seminar was Hell. As if the human conception of Hell was a literal place you could grasp, and sit in, and it involved dung beetles. Nothing but dung beetles. Intermission didn't make it any better, for the bright lights of the stations promenade only served to remind him, that he inevitably must go back to Hell. Still, he was spending time with Jocelyn that didn't involve him trying to convince her he wasn't a horrible, horrible scoundrel unworthy of her attention. So there was that, he supposed.
"When uh...do we need to be back?"
"Oh," she said, looking up from the pamphlet, having almost forgotten he was there. "Ah, according to the schedule, we have two and a half hours before the next session begins. Would you like to get lunch with me? I'm completely famished. I honestly didn't realize it when we were in there. I was too wrapped up in his lecture." She glanced about the promenade as they moved along with the crowd. "Where would you like to go?"
Somewhere far, far away. Like an airlock. "Umm...there looked to be a nice bistro when we first came onto the promenade. It's on the other side of the station though, if you're up for a walk?"
"Of course. We have the time, though I would like to get back a bit early if possible to catch the doctor before he goes on stage. I really wanted to ask him about his re-sequencing options." She smiled as they walked, turning to peer at him. "Are you finding this at all interesting? I feel like I am prattling on and on when I haven't even asked you if you were enjoying yourself."
"Oh. Yes. It really is very fascinating." He produced about the fakest, full-toothed grin anyone in the slow history of the galaxy had ever produced. They stopped moving as Jocelyn's eyes bored into him, reading him like a book.
"Okay, it's not really my thing." He broke the smile, taking a more serious demeanor. "But...I'm trying?" He gave her something of a puppy dog look.
"Oh, I suppose it never occurred to me that you wouldn't..." Her smile faltered slightly, but only for a moment. "Well, I suppose trying does count for something, doesn't it? I mean, you could have walked out at any point. And you certainly do not have to feel obligated to go to the next session if you're bored. I wouldn't blame you if you didn't."
"No no, when you asked me to come with you I said yes, even knowing that the title of the seminar was 'The genetic replication of Terran dung beetle mutations and their application in modern medical science.'" He took a deep breath to recover from such a long line of words. "Besides, I can't give you an excuse to bail on me when I drag you to a Security seminar which will involve explosions, and guns, and knives, and... explosions."
"No, I suppose not," she admitted, her smile returning. "Though I do not know how I would fare in that sort of seminar. I would be thinking of all the wounds those weapons could cause and how I would have to patch them up." Turning back to the various shops and restaurants, she searched for the bistro he'd spoken of. "Where, exactly, are we going? I am quite lost."
"Oh, we're almost there, this is just a detour, small one, trust me." He turned a corner, taking them off the busy corridors of the promenade, to the mostly silent halls of the habitat areas. "I actually received word just before we left for the seminar that an...old friend was staying here on the station. I wanted to drop in to say hello, if that's all right."
"Oh, well, I suppose. Just as long as we are back in time for the second session." She glanced at him. "He won't mind you dropping in on him? With a guest?"
"Oh, he won't mind, we go back a long while. He was a friend on Betazed, before I joined Starfleet..." He trailed off, glancing away uncomfortably. "However...I'll have to ask that you remain in the hall. He's a very...private person. He doesn't warm up well to strangers, as Humans would say. I really just need to stop in and say hello though. It'll only be a few minutes. Then we can get some lunch, and return to the...seminar..."
"Oh. Well. Alright, if you think it best." She frowned slightly, a bit miffed at him dragging her to his friend's quarters and then asking her to stay out of the way. "I'll just review the notes I've taken on the lecture while I'm waiting."
"Good idea," Atton said, glancing warily at her as he approached the door and rang the chimes. There was no answer to the first inquiry. Glancing now and again to Jocelyn and feeling rather stupid, he continued to ring the chimes. Without warning, the doors opened and a hand shot out, grabbing him by the collar to drag him inside.
Before Atton even had time to react, the man who had dragged him in paced off to a corner of the room. Atton looked around at the room, his face quickly growing pale. The place looked as though it had been ransacked. Chairs had been tossed aside, nearly every glass surface broken, and the couch had been ripped open in several places. When the man finally turned around to face Atton, he appeared to have suffered a beating as severe as the room had received.
"By the four deities, Batan... what the hell happened!?"
"I, I had just come back from the promenade...some man was in here! I didn't get a good look at him. He took it, Atton. He took it all!"
Atton's face grew pale as he stared at Batan and scanned the surface of his mind. It was filled with true, genuine fear. Atton's fear soon mirrored his. He had made a terrible, terrible mistake in coming. "How much Batan...how much did you have..." His silence only added to Atton's discontent. He wasn't just some minor drug dealer anymore, oh no. "HOW MUCH BATAN?!"
"Enough that I'm a dead man! There...there's a syndicate boss due here anytime, and you...you were supposed to be here an hour ago!"
"Gods damned seminar..." Atton growled. "When is the boss supposed to be here?"
"Not long. Look, you have to get me out of here. Take me to your ship, use that uniform for something useful for once!"
"I can't... there's no way I could explain..."
"No way you could explain what, exactly?" A dangerous voice asked from the doorway.
