War. It was official now.
Deirdre hadn't stopped working but she had kept an ear on the President during his speech. It hadn't contained anything unexpected, really; the usual tough words toward the Enemy, warnings of tough times to come for the people at home, determination and the like. Nevertheless it felt better to hear it, to know that the President and the Council were there and behind the effort. That they knew how many had already died due to the bombardment of Forthyce and what that Tzenkethi strategy meant for the days and weeks ahead.
Preparations were well underway on the Aquarius. The red-haired Chief Engineer had already authorized the shut-down of dozens of “luxury” systems, unhooking them from the power network. It may only mean 2-4% increase in available power during a battle scenario to not have the power leading into those devices but that 2-4% could save lives aboard. Numerous EPS conduits leading to and from defensive systems were in the process of being reinforced. While it wouldn't do anything for the amount or efficiency of the power available it would make it more difficult for the conduits to explode under duress, either from over-use or battle damage.
Because their deployment order for the upcoming shepherd duty does not include permission to engage, Deirdre was concentrating more effort on the shield systems than the weapons. If the Aquarius had to maneuver and take a pounding to help the evacuation ships get away, she was determined that the force-fields would hold out longer than they have during previous engagements. the Aquarius and her crew lacked the luxury of putting into port for another major repair this time, putting more pressure on her and the engineering crew to keep her in one piece.
With a grim set to her mouth, she continued on with the preparations.
