Mystery Ignored
Doctor Jocelyn Nidari & Nurse Rosaline Marquez
When Nurse Marquez ventured into the Medical Chief's office, she found Jocelyn staring dreamily at the overflowing vase on her desk. An open box of chocolates, an upended teddy bear, and several magazines littered the table. Elbow propped on the desk and chin resting in her palm, she looked the perfect picture of smitten. Having never seen the quirky doctor in this state, Rosaline stopped to stare. After a moment, she cleared her throat.
"Doctor? Are you feeling alright?"
"Hmmm?" Jocelyn asked distantly.
"Doctor Nidari? Jocelyn. Jocelyn."
"Yes?" She finally turned to peer at the nurse, her daydream broken. "Oh. Rosaline. Did you need something?"
"Not particularly. I came to see the spectacle." She waved a hand at the romantic chaos. "Was there a card included?"
"Nope," she said with a smile.
"So you have no idea who sent it?"
"Nope." Her smile broadened.
Rosaline blinked. "Why are you smiling? Don't you want to know?"
"Not particularly," Jocelyn admitted. "But… if you had to guess, who would be your prime suspect?"
"Well… what about that bulky Betazoid security officer that makes you blush?"
Jocelyn blushed. "I highly doubt it. He doesn't seem the type to send teddy bears and chocolate, not to mention the newest issues of Sexy Rihan Male."
"Someone sent you SRM?" Rosaline rushed forward and snatched up one of the magazines, flipping through the pages. "Niiiiice. I have only heard rumors of these!"
"Me too," she said with a smirk.
"Well, what about the Captain?" Rosaline asked, still flipping through pages of well-oiled, half-naked Romulans. "He could be very thankful for that massage you gave him."
"That's ludicrous. I don't think he would cross that line with any of his officers… well, that isn't entirely true. I once thought that he and… well… that's all but impossible now. I think I would be the last one he would look to romantically. And this is a bit much for one small headache, don't you think?"
"I suppose," Rosaline admitted. She turned the magazine sideways and flipped out the centerfold. Her perfectly painted eyebrows nearly rose to her hairline. "Wow. Their bodies almost make me forget their impossible-to-pronounce names. Mind if I borrow Co-gah, Dess-store-ee, Arrr-in-heee, and Leer-rack?"
"Knock yourself out. Just don't get any drool on the pages," Jocelyn teased. "I have more when you grow tired of that one."
"So…," Rosaline continued when she'd gathered up the will power to close the magazine. "Why don't you want to know who sent all of this to you? Someone must like you a lot."
"The fantasy is always better than the reality, Marquez," she said dismissively. "Someone probably sent all of this as a joke. Nearly everyone dislikes sickbay and I've hardly had the chance to socialize. Though I'm not one of them, there are some women on this ship that freak out at the first hint of romance…"
"COuMcCOUGowanOugh," Rosaline interrupted with fake coughs.
Jocelyn smiled thinly. "Yes, the rumors are trickling out of that department, but you shouldn't repeat them. That is her business."
"What business?" Rosaline asked innocently.
"Exactly. The point is that I am not the type to be scandalized by half-nude magazines. I stare at naked bodies all day long."
Rosaline lifted one eyebrow.
"Well not all day," Jocelyn corrected quickly, seeing the nurse's look. "When people come in injured, I mean. Nudity is part of the job."
The other eyebrow rose.
"Not my being nude! Oh, you know what I mean." Flustered, she threw a flower at Rosaline's head and missed. "I'll probably never find out who sent them and I don't particularly care."
"So, who were you daydreaming about? Sexy Romulans?"
"No," she smiled. "Orions..."
"Pirates?"
"Of course! Pirates. Pirates in need of medical attention."
"Don't wish pirates on us, please. I hear they are never romantic and usually have poor personal hygiene."
"I suppose you are right," she sighed. "The fantasy is always better than the reality."
"Well, back to your smelly Orions. If you don't mind, I'll stick to the sexy Romulans," Rosaline said, waving the magazine. She smiled and tucked it under her arm.
"Romulans probably have poor personal hygiene, too," Jocelyn muttered under her breath as the nurse left. She peered sidelong at her flowers as she dug through empty papers in the box of chocolates in search of one yet uneaten. After popping one in her mouth, she rested her chin in her palm and resumed her previous daydream.
