“With respect Admiral…”
Akena Le-Gran didn’t get another word in edgewise before he was cut off by the firmness of Admiral Misheven’s voice. The large Rigelian alshat (one of their five genders) bristled. “Captain, I appreciate…understand your concerns.”
Le-Gran made his best attempt to not verbally question that statement, he was unsure of his non-verbal questioning, however.
“I assure you that this movement by the Tzenkethi won’t be taken lightly by Command or the Federation, but it is a delicate situation… you of all people should know that.”
The Morian riled. He did know better… as a diplomat. However, he wasn’t currently a diplomat. Yes, it was one of the many hats he wore as a starship captain, especially given his ship was an Ambassador¬ class. Still, he didn’t care at the moment.
“Admiral, those blasted tiger-lizards have spent the last months encroaching on our space without anything stronger than a bluster from the Council about unchecked aggression. The Cardassians certainly have noticed our timidity, you don’t think the Tzenkethi have as well, Admiral?”
Misheven glowered. “Captain,” he said gruffly. “I do understand what you’re saying…”
The Morian suddenly went a bit pale as he remembered that the Rigelian had partial reptilian traits. He started to apologize when the Rigelian made it obvious that wasn’t his primary concern with his statement.
“I actually agree with it, believe it or not…” Misheven said. “However, I also understand that we can’t go starting a war with the Tzenkethi while we’re dealing with the Cardassians. I also know that a primitive planet with nothing more useful than some possibly sentient penguins.”
“But the penguins,” Le-Gran extorted. “You can’t just leave them to those…those beasts.”
As the Admiral’s face turned from stern to mild amusement, Le-Gran sighed defeated, realizing how absurd his reasoning had grown. “I see your point, Admiral.”
Nodding sagely Misheven softened. “Like I said, Akena, I know what you’re saying. Lord knows I’d like to give those bastards a licking for that little stunt they pulled with the radio transmitter, but right now the math just isn’t in our favor. The Council is taking a hard-line approach on their continued expansion, but we’re not going to start a shooting war unless we have too, not with the Cardassian situation heating up again.”
“Yes, Admiral.”
Le-Gran exhaled again and licked at his lips for a moment, disliking the taste of defeat as much as ever. “What are our orders Admiral?”
“You might actually like them for a change.”
He doubted it, but Le-Gran nodded. “Oh?”
“Starfleet agrees with your suggestion that Aquarius remain in the region, least the Tzenkethi get any bright ideas about the shipping in the area, what with that ‘Expeditionary Force’ and all.”
Surprised and pleased Le-Gran smiled slightly. “I do like this orders. So just patrol the system and make sure those rat-bastards stay put?”
“Pretty much,” Misheven said. “Just remember, Starfleet hasn’t authorized you to take direct action against them… but if you’re provoked…”
Grinning the Morian nodded.”Very well, Admiral. We’ll stay on patrol here.”
